What Happened
On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan mountains, causing a deadly avalanche, debris flow, and flash flooding into Nepal and Tibet. This disastrous chain of events is not uncommon in the Himalayas. However, the aftermath is unprecedented.
For additional context:
- An avalanche happens when a large amount of snow, ice, and/or rock fall down a mountain or hill quickly
- Flash flooding occurs when there is a large amount of water that rushes down a narrow low-lying area, such as a street, canyon, or valley, abruptly and suddenly.
- Debris flow is a destructive type of landslide that occurs when soil, rock, and other debris flows down rapidly.
All of these events can be extremely dangerous for those caught in the pathway of these events.
What is the Impact
The word “catastrophic" does not even begin to capture how terrible the aftermath of the flash flooding and debris flow is. This disaster has led to nearly 4,000 people missing, over 1,100 dead, and still counting at the time this excerpt was developed. Currently, shelters in Nepal and Tibet are at capacity. As a result, helicopters are delivering food and supplies to and from regional Nepali army bases.
Due to the flash flooding and debris flow, the villages downstream are completely wiped out; people cannot return home to rebuild, as they can't even recognize where their homes once stood. There is no electricity, no safe place to walk, and for many, no place to go.
To make matters worse, the rescuers who are attempting to identify survivors and recover those who have tragically passed are at a steep disadvantage with the quicksand-like mud that covers the towns and areas alongside the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi Rivers, and the Rasuwagadhi Border checkpoint and Gyirong Port.
How Does This Happen?
As a disability-led organization that supports disabled people before, during, and after disasters, The Partnership has some ideas about what could have contributed. We cannot ignore the factors that have contributed to the climate chaos in this region. Monsoons have intensified and become deadlier; Himalayan glaciers have been, and still are, at risk of melting as our planet warms; and geopolitical interests in fossil fuels are affecting Nepal, Tibet, and surrounding areas.
Because Nepal is shaped like a bowl and sits next to mountains and rivers, during monsoon season, the dirt paths and greenery would absorb the rain easily. However, over the past decade, there has been a rise in industrialization, with more concrete present. This means water and other debris no longer get absorbed and instead flood the cities during monsoon season.
China has drilled a 7,000-meter (approximately 4.3 miles) borehole in the Tibetan Plateau in the Himalayan region for gas exploration, a choice that has placed the actions under much scrutiny following the August 26th disaster. Earlier this year, it was reported that “80.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas was confirmed” in the region, which is about 32 million Olympic-sized swimming pools worth. In general, drilling and gas exploration raise many environmental concerns, such as groundwater contamination, air pollution, and more. Additionally, the Himalayan mountains sit on tectonic plates, which means more frequent earthquakes/seismic activity that can trigger avalanches.
Again, The Partnership has no exact way of pinpointing what happened. However, it is imperative to look at systemic and human-made factors that contribute to the severity of disasters.
Here’s What We Do Know
Many news stories report that survivors could run or climb to safety in a matter of minutes. This likely was not true for disabled survivors. Disabled people are 2-to-4 times more likely to die or be injured in conflict situations and disasters than people without disabilities. Given the intensity and rapid nature of the events, we know that this disaster has impacted everyone greatly, regardless of access and functional needs. We are also concerned that communication and dissemination efforts for shelter, food, and supplies distribution are not reaching disabled community members, leaving them more at risk.
