Disastrous: Left Behind
Disastrous: Left Behind is a project of Portlight Strategies, utilizing both amateur photography and professional photojournalism to document the failures of non-inclusive disaster planning and its effects. An exhibition of these photos will travel around the country, primarily in conjunction with the ADA Legacy Tour, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of the signing of the ADA into law. This exhibition, mounted in city and town halls, and other local governmental buildings, will raise awareness of the issues our community faces in disasters, such as inaccessible transportation and shelter, and lack of access to vital services when our only choice is to shelter in place. In spurring community organization and activism, we will identify a way forward, with the disability community and its stakeholders actively engaged with emergency management agencies, transportation and shelter operators, and first responders.
