Support Accessible Disaster Recovery: Reach Out to Your Mayor Today!

Disabled disaster survivors need you to reach out to your mayor!

For the past couple of months, The Partnership has supported the Disaster Housing Recovery Coalition (DHRC) in circulating an organizational support letter regarding the bipartisan “Reforming Disaster Recovery Act” (RDRA) (S.1686 / H.R.5940). Your help meant that we were able to surpass our goal and receive over 500 signatures of support.

That letter shared that, if passed, the bill would permanently authorize HUD's Community Development Block Grant - Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program. The CDBG-DR program provides flexible grants to help presidentially-declared disaster areas rebuild affordable housing and other infrastructure and make critical reforms to ensure a more efficient and equitable disaster recovery. This will support Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities, folks with disabilities, low-income communities, and immigrants, communities with the fewest resources, to rebuild after being hit the hardest by a disaster.

We can’t do it alone! The DHRC has heard that a letter of support from mayors across the country is vital to help pass this bill and hopes to collect sign-ons from mayors across the nation.

Reach out to your mayor using the sample outreach email to encourage them to let Congress know we need funding for the CDBG-DR program.

Our goal is to get 50 mayors to sign this letter and send it back to us to deliver to Congress by 11/13. The letters are customizable, so Mayors can talk about their city’s experience with disaster if they wish.

Would you be willing to get the mayors in your state and region to sign on to this letter and share with other mayors they know?

Please feel free to reach out to Meghan from NLIHC at mmertyris@nlihc.org with any questions about this bill or letter, or if you want to chat more about collaborating with NLIHC!
