Since February 28, 2020, we have been holding Daily COVID-19 Disability Rights calls where partners across the nation come together each and every day to share good and promising practices, systemic rising issues, and community-wide advocacy engagement related to the rights and needs of people with disabilities during this public health emergency and concurrent disasters.

We have been bringing advocates, CIL staff, emergency managers, public health officials, Red Cross, CDC, federal agencies, and allies together daily for 22 months straight (and counting).

Since Hurricane Harvey in 2017, we have held weekly National Stakeholder Calls where a wide range of stakeholders with the shared interest in the disaster-related rights and needs of people with disabilities engage with one another.

This year, our Disability and Disaster Hotline responded to more than 600 calls:

  • Texas Winter Storm in February
  • Hurricane Laura in August
  • Hurricane Ida in August
  • West Coast wildfires and floods
  • Quad-State tornado and extreme weather in December

Thanks to your generous donations and our Hotline Operators, more than half of the 600+ callers' needs were resolved. In addition, early in the year, we assisted several Tribes: the Lower Muscogees Tribe of Georgia; the Coosa Tribe; the Ma-Chis Lower Creek Indian Tribe of Alabama; and Cherokee Tribes from The Qualla in acquiring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The Hotline assisted hundreds of disabled people, among disaster-related needs we found many callers’, seeking food and water, accessible sheltering, immediate economic support, durable medical equipment, and medication.

Ongoing needs resulted in home repairs, temporary non-congregate shelter, personal assistant services in shelter settings, and accessible affordable integrated housing.
