Alaska Earthquake and Tsunami Response: Lessons and Next Steps
This After Action Report and Improvement Plan (AAR/IP) shares what Alaska learned in a December 2024 statewide exercise simulating a magnitude 8.2 earthquake followed by a massive tsunami, and outlines the concrete steps to strengthen preparedness and protect all residents.
The three-hour tabletop exercise brought together emergency managers, health agencies, disability advocates, and community organizations to walk through the first hours, the first 72 hours, and the first 45 days after such a disaster. Their discussions revealed both the strengths Alaska can build on and the critical gaps that must be addressed.
