Shaylin Sluzalis – Bio
Shaylin M. Sluzalis, from Williamsport, Pennsylvania and a new Philadelphian, is a twenty-three year old disability rights activist. She was the lead organizer in establishing the North Central PA ADAPT Chapter, is an organizer for PA ADAPT, and is an active member of National ADAPT – ADAPT focuses on ending the institutional bias of people with disabilities through non-violent civil disobedience. Shaylin is a recent college graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Pennsylvania College of Technology, an affiliate of Penn State University. During her college years, she worked at the Center for Independent Living of North Central PA (CILNCP) as the Office Administrator, Independent Monitoring for Quality (IM4Q) Coordinator, and the Consumer & Public Relations Coordinator. Shaylin has a lifetime of experience in the disability community and as an advocate for her sister, Brittani who lives with Cerebral Palsy. Shaylin’s active role in the disability community led her to deployment through Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies in October 2017 to Puerto Rico, a week following Hurricane Maria. Shaylin served as a “boots on the grounds” consultant in Puerto Rico to assess and advocate for equal access, and full inclusion of all people with disabilities and older adults post-Hurricane Maria. Shaylin played a role in crafting and editing The Readying Elders and Americans with Disabilities Inclusively (READI) Act, and works with the Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies to ensure equal access to emergency programs, and full inclusion of the whole community before, during and after disasters in our nation, territories, and worldwide.
